Dovobet Gel 60g is a prescription-only topical medicine used to treat scalp psoriasis and mild-to-moderate plaque psoriasis on the body in adults aged 18 years and over.

It contains two active ingredients: calcipotriol, a vitamin D analogue, and betamethasone, a potent corticosteroid. These ingredients work together to help reduce inflammation, redness, itching and the build-up of scaly skin associated with psoriasis.

Dovobet Gel is generally applied once daily for a prescribed treatment period. A healthcare professional will determine whether it is suitable based on the location and severity of psoriasis, medical history and previous treatments.

How Does Dovobet Gel Work?

Psoriasis causes skin cells to multiply more quickly than normal, leading to thickened, red or discoloured, scaly patches.

Dovobet Gel contains two active ingredients that target different aspects of psoriasis:

Calcipotriol: Helps regulate skin cell growth and reduces excessive scaling.
Betamethasone: Reduces inflammation, itching and redness.
Together, they help manage the symptoms of plaque psoriasis.

How to Use Dovobet Gel

  • Apply a thin layer to the affected areas once daily, as prescribed.
  • For scalp psoriasis, the recommended initial treatment period is 4 weeks.
  • For psoriasis affecting other areas of the body, the recommended initial treatment period is 8 weeks.
  • Do not exceed 15g per day or 100g per week across calcipotriol-containing products.
  • Do not apply to more than 30% of the body's surface area.
  • Avoid the face, eyes, mouth, genitals and skin folds.
  • Wash your hands after application unless your hands are being treated.
  • Avoid washing the treated area immediately after application.
  • Further treatment may be recommended following clinical review.

Who Should Not Use Dovobet Gel?

Dovobet Gel may not be suitable for people with:

  • An allergy to calcipotriol, betamethasone or another ingredient.
  • Certain skin infections, including untreated bacterial, viral or fungal infections.
  • Disorders affecting calcium metabolism.
  • Erythrodermic, exfoliative or pustular psoriasis.
  • Certain other skin conditions, such as rosacea or acne.
  • Tell your prescriber if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, using other topical corticosteroids or have a medical condition that could affect treatment suitability.

Possible Side Effects

Like all medicines, Dovobet Gel can cause side effects, although not everyone experiences them.

Possible side effects include:

  • Itching or skin irritation.
  • Burning or stinging sensations.
  • Redness or rash.
  • Folliculitis (inflamed hair follicles).
  • Skin thinning with prolonged or inappropriate corticosteroid use.
  • Using excessive amounts or applying the medicine over large areas may increase the risk of corticosteroid-related side effects or changes in calcium levels.

Seek medical advice if you experience significant irritation, signs of infection or worsening psoriasis.

Important Information

Dovobet Gel is intended for external use only and should be used exactly as prescribed. It contains a potent corticosteroid and should not be used continuously beyond the recommended treatment period without medical supervision.
