Contraception

Contraception (also called birth control) refers to methods used to prevent pregnancy.

Overview

Contraception works by:

  • Preventing ovulation (so no egg is released)
  • Blocking sperm from reaching an egg
  • Altering the uterine lining to prevent implantation

Short‑Acting Hormonal Methods

Require regular user action (daily, weekly, monthly):

  • Combined Pill (oestrogen + progestogen)
  • Progestogen‑only Pill (“mini‑pill”)
  • Patch – worn on skin
  • Vaginal Ring – inserted monthly
  • Injection (e.g., Depo‑Provera) – every 3 months

These methods suppress ovulation, thicken cervical mucus, or alter the uterine lining. Perfect use: >99% effective; typical use: ~93–99%

Note: Pill and similar methods may carry small increased risks of blood clots or stroke, especially in smokers or those predisposed . Consult your doctor to assess your risks
