- Dermovate Ointment 0.05%
Dermovate Ointment 0.05% is a prescription-only, very potent topical corticosteroid containing clobetasol propionate. It is prescribed for severe inflammatory skin conditions, including eczema, dermatitis and localised plaque psoriasis, particularly when less potent topical corticosteroids have not provided adequate relief.
Its rich, occlusive ointment base is especially suitable for dry, thickened and scaly skin. Dermovate Ointment helps reduce inflammation, redness, swelling and itching associated with resistant inflammatory skin conditions.
Available in 30g and 100g tubes, Dermovate Ointment should be used for short periods under medical supervision.
Apply a thin layer of Dermovate Ointment to the affected skin once or twice daily, following your prescriber's instructions.
- Gently spread a small amount over the affected area.
- Wash your hands after application unless treating your hands.
- Avoid contact with the eyes, mouth and sensitive areas.
- Do not apply under airtight dressings unless specifically instructed.
- Continuous treatment should not exceed four weeks without medical reassessment.
- Do not exceed 50g per week unless specifically directed by a specialist.
For psoriasis, use only on the areas and for the duration prescribed. Do not use on widespread plaques without specialist supervision.
Important: Paraffin-containing ointments can increase the risk of serious burns if they soak into clothing, bedding or dressings. Keep fabrics away from naked flames and smoking materials.
Do not use Dermovate Ointment if you:
- Are allergic to clobetasol propionate or any other ingredient.
- Have untreated bacterial, fungal or viral skin infections.
- Have rosacea or acne vulgaris.
- Have perioral dermatitis.
- Have itching without inflammation.
- Are treating an infant under one year of age.
Dermovate Ointment should not be used for untreated genital or perianal itching. Extra caution is required when treating the face, skin folds or large body areas.
Consult your healthcare professional before use if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or have a history of steroid-related skin reactions.
Possible side effects include:
- Burning, irritation or itching.
- Skin redness or discomfort.
- Skin thinning or stretch marks.
- Changes in skin pigmentation.
- Visible small blood vessels.
- Worsening or masking of skin infections.
Excessive or prolonged use may result in systemic corticosteroid absorption and adrenal suppression. Psoriasis may also worsen or rebound following inappropriate treatment or withdrawal.
Stop treatment and seek medical advice if you develop severe irritation, an allergic reaction or worsening symptoms.
