Wegovy Tablet Doses Explained: 1.5mg, 4mg, 9mg and 25mg

Wegovy tablets are available in four UK strengths: 1.5 mg, 4 mg, 9 mg and 25 mg.

Treatment normally starts at 1.5 mg once daily and is gradually increased, with at least one month at each dose level.

The licensed maintenance dose is 25 mg once daily, although the UK product information states that the dose can be maintained at a previous dose level if needed.

Dose changes should always be agreed with your prescriber.

What are the Wegovy tablet doses?

Wegovy tablets contain semaglutide, the same active ingredient used in Wegovy injections, but the tablet and injection have very different dose strengths because semaglutide is absorbed differently when taken by mouth.

The UK dosing schedule is:

Each stage normally lasts for at least one month before further dose escalation.

Why does the dose increase gradually?

Increasing gradually allows the body time to adjust to semaglutide.

Gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation and abdominal discomfort are among the commonly reported effects of semaglutide, and symptoms can be more noticeable while the dose is being increased.

This is why dose escalation should be guided by response and tolerability, rather than simply treating the dosing calendar as a race to reach the highest strength.

Do you have to reach 25mg?

25mg is the licensed maintenance dose for Wegovy tablets.

However, the UK Summary of Product Characteristics also specifically states:

“If needed, the dose can be maintained at the previous dose level.”

That is an important distinction.

At Pharmulous, our approach is to consider the whole patient: appetite control, progress, side effects, nutrition, medical history and long-term treatment goals.

A higher dose is not automatically the right dose for every individual.

Is 25mg of Wegovy tablets much stronger than a 2.4mg injection?

You cannot compare the numbers directly.

Oral semaglutide has much more variable absorption than injected semaglutide. The product information specifically warns that switching between the two formulations cannot simply be predicted from the milligram number.

So 25 mg orally does not mean “ten times stronger” than a 2.4 mg injection.

How Pharmulous can help

At Pharmulous, weight-management treatment is clinician-led rather than dose-led.

We believe treatment should be reviewed around the individual patient, including effectiveness, tolerability, lifestyle and longer-term maintenance goals.

If you're considering medical weight-management treatment, a Pharmulous clinician can assess the available options and whether treatment is clinically appropriate for you.
