Switching From Mounjaro or Wegovy Injections to Wegovy Tablets: New Study Shows Further Weight Loss
Blog
New real-world data suggests people switching from injectable weight-loss medicines to Wegovy tablets continued to lose weight. Pharmulous explains the OCTANE study.
If you've been using a weight loss injection such as Mounjaro or Wegovy, you may have wondered whether moving to a daily weight loss tablet means sacrificing results.
New real-world research offers some encouraging early evidence.
People who switched from injectable GLP-1-based weight-loss treatment to the Wegovy pill (oral semaglutide) lost an additional 4.1% of their body weight on average over the following three months, according to new data presented at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) annual meeting in September 2026.
For someone weighing around 100 kg when they switched, that was roughly another 4 kg or 8.8 lb of weight loss.
So what does this mean if you're considering switching from Mounjaro injections to Wegovy tablets, or from Wegovy injections to the Wegovy pill?
Let's look at the study properly.
What was the OCTANE study?
The new data comes from a study called OCTANE.
Researchers analysed real-world information from 194 adults using the Ro telehealth platform in the United States.
Participants had previously been prescribed either:
- injectable semaglutide, the active ingredient in Wegovy, or
- injectable tirzepatide, the active ingredient in Mounjaro/Zepbound.
They then switched to once-daily oral semaglutide — the Wegovy pill and remained on treatment for three months. Novo Nordisk
The average starting weight when patients switched to the tablet was approximately 100.5 kg (221.6 lb) and their average BMI was 34.5 kg/m². Morningstar
How much weight did people lose after switching to Wegovy tablets?
The results were encouraging.
So these patients did not simply maintain the weight they had already lost on injections.
As a group, they continued losing weight during the first three months after changing to the tablet.
Does this mean Wegovy tablets cause more weight loss than injections?
Not necessarily.
You may see headlines suggesting that patients switching to the Wegovy pill “lost more weight”.
What the study actually shows is that participants experienced further weight loss after switching.
It did not randomly compare one group continuing injections against another group switching to tablets, so we can't conclude from OCTANE alone that the Wegovy pill is superior to injectable Wegovy or Mounjaro.
Real-world studies can identify useful patterns, but they cannot establish cause and effect as reliably as a randomised clinical trial. The researchers themselves acknowledge limitations including self-reported weight, missing data and the possibility of selection bias because patients had to remain on oral treatment to be included.
The more useful conclusion is:
Switching from an injectable weight-loss medicine to Wegovy tablets did not appear to stop weight-loss progress in this group. Many patients continued to lose meaningful additional weight.
For people considering a tablet because injections no longer suit their lifestyle, that is potentially important.
Can you switch from Mounjaro to Wegovy tablets?
Yes; where clinically appropriate. Read the Pharmulous guide for more information.
The OCTANE population included patients previously using tirzepatide, the active ingredient in Mounjaro, as well as people using injectable semaglutide.
The doses of Mounjaro and Wegovy aren't directly interchangeable, and patients shouldn't attempt to calculate their own equivalent tablet dose.
Your previous medicine, dose, side effects, treatment gap, current weight and response to treatment all need to be considered.
What about switching from Wegovy injections to Wegovy tablets?
This may feel like a more obvious switch because both formulations contain semaglutide. Read the Pharmulous guide for more information.
But they aren't simply the same dose delivered differently.
Wegovy tablets are taken once daily, whereas injectable Wegovy is normally administered once weekly.
The oral treatment also has its own dose-escalation schedule.
Wegovy tablets are available in:
1.5 mg → 4 mg → 9 mg → 25 mg
and treatment is gradually increased rather than patients simply converting milligram-for-milligram from their injection.
Your starting tablet dose after switching should therefore be determined by the prescribing clinician.
Why might somebody choose tablets instead of injections?
Weight-loss injections work extremely well for many patients, so there is no suggestion that everybody should change.
But there are circumstances where tablets may be attractive.
- Needle anxiety
Some patients simply dislike injections.
For someone who has tolerated GLP-1 treatment well but finds weekly injections stressful, an oral alternative can remove that barrier.
- Frequent travel
Carrying injection pens and thinking about medicine storage while travelling can be inconvenient.
A tablet may be easier to incorporate into some lifestyles.
- Preference
Sometimes the simplest reason is enough:
some people would rather take a tablet than inject themselves.
In the OCTANE study, 82.4% of participants with available data reported at least one improvement after switching treatment. Reported benefits included better-fitting clothes and healthier eating.
That doesn't prove the tablet caused those improvements, but it provides an interesting picture of patient experience outside a conventional clinical trial.
Is the Wegovy pill as effective as injectable weight-loss medication?
We need to separate two questions.
Can oral Wegovy produce substantial weight loss?
Yes.
Previous clinical trial evidence has already shown that high-dose oral semaglutide can produce clinically significant weight loss.
The newer OCTANE data adds something different: it suggests that patients who have already been using injectable GLP-1 treatment may continue losing weight after switching to the oral formulation. Novo Nordisk
Does OCTANE prove tablets are better than injections?
No.
That comparison wasn't tested.
Different patients may ultimately prefer different treatment routes.
For one person, weekly Mounjaro may offer the right balance of appetite control and convenience.
For another, Wegovy injections may suit them perfectly.
For someone else, a daily Wegovy tablet may fit much better into everyday life.
The right treatment isn't simply the newest one.
It's the one that is safe, effective, tolerable and sustainable for that individual patient.
Can Wegovy tablets be used for weight maintenance?
Weight maintenance is becoming increasingly important as more patients reach their target weight after using GLP-1 medicines.
Not everybody switching from an injection to a tablet will necessarily want further significant weight loss.
Some patients may instead be looking for:
- continued appetite control
- reduced food noise
- protection against weight regain
- an easier long-term treatment option
- a lower or more appropriate ongoing treatment intensity.
At Pharmulous, we believe reaching your target weight should lead to a discussion about maintenance, rather than automatically bringing treatment to an abrupt end.
That also means monitoring is important.
If someone switches to Wegovy tablets and continues losing weight when additional weight loss is no longer appropriate, their treatment should be reviewed.
Thinking about switching from Mounjaro or Wegovy injections to Wegovy tablets?
Don't switch doses yourself.
Changing between injectable and oral weight-management medicines needs a clinical assessment because the doses aren't directly equivalent.
At Pharmulous, our prescribing clinicians can review:
- which injection you're currently taking
- your current dose
- your treatment history
- how much weight you've lost
- your current BMI
- your side effects
- your appetite and food noise
- whether your aim is further weight loss or maintenance
- whether switching to a tablet is clinically appropriate.
For some patients, staying with an injection will still make the most sense.
For others, Wegovy tablets may provide a practical needle-free alternative without necessarily bringing their weight-loss journey to a halt.
The early real-world evidence is certainly encouraging.
Important Points
The new OCTANE study provides one of the first real-world looks at what happens when people move from injectable weight-loss medicines to oral Wegovy.
After three months:
- Average further weight loss: 4.1%
- Average weight lost: around 4 kg
- Around 41% lost at least another 5% of their body weight
And this occurred in people who had already been receiving injectable semaglutide or tirzepatide before making the switch.
It doesn't prove that Wegovy tablets work better than injections.
But it does challenge the assumption that moving away from injections necessarily means compromising weight-loss progress.
And for patients looking for a daily, needle-free alternative, that's an important development.
