Wegovy Tablets and Warfarin: Can You Take Them Together?
If you take warfarin and are considering Wegovy tablets, you may be wondering whether the two medicines can be taken together.
The short answer is:
They may be used together in appropriate patients, but closer INR monitoring is recommended when semaglutide treatment is started.
Does Wegovy interact with warfarin?
The interaction data are reassuring in one respect.
In a study reported in the Wegovy tablet Summary of Product Characteristics, semaglutide did not produce a clinically relevant change in warfarin exposure or its effect on INR after a single dose of warfarin.
However, that isn't the end of the story.
Cases of decreased INR have been reported when semaglutide was used alongside another coumarin anticoagulant called acenocoumarol.
For this reason, the Wegovy product information recommends frequent INR monitoring when semaglutide is started in patients taking warfarin or another coumarin anticoagulant.
What is INR and why does it matter?
INR stands for International Normalised Ratio.
It measures how long your blood takes to clot and is used to make sure your warfarin dose is providing the right level of anticoagulation.
If the INR becomes too low, your anticoagulation may be insufficient.
If it becomes too high, bleeding risk can increase.
That's why changes that may affect warfarin treatment need appropriate monitoring.
Does this mean I cannot take Wegovy tablets?
No.
The Wegovy Patient Information Leaflet specifically tells people using warfarin or similar oral anticoagulants that they may need more frequent blood tests to monitor how quickly their blood clots.
It does not state that warfarin and Wegovy are automatically contraindicated together.
Instead, it means treatment needs to be properly coordinated and monitored.
What should I do before starting?
Tell your Wegovy prescriber that you take warfarin.
You should also make sure the healthcare professional or anticoagulation service responsible for your warfarin knows about any significant medication changes.
Your prescriber may want appropriate arrangements for more frequent INR monitoring when semaglutide is initiated.
Do not alter your warfarin dose yourself.
What about taking the tablets at the same time?
Wegovy tablets have their own administration rules.
Take Wegovy after at least 8 hours of fasting, with up to approximately 120ml of water, and wait at least 30 minutes before taking another oral medicine.
So you should not simply swallow Wegovy and your other morning tablets together.
Your individual medication schedule can be discussed with your pharmacist, prescriber or anticoagulation team.
How Pharmulous can help
Patients taking anticoagulants often need a little more clinical coordination than somebody taking no regular medication.
At Pharmulous, safety comes before simply processing an order.
Our clinical team can review your current medicines and, where necessary, ask for appropriate monitoring or information from the healthcare team managing your anticoagulation.
Complex medication doesn't automatically mean weight-management treatment is impossible, it means it needs to be managed properly.
