Can You Drink Alcohol While Taking Wegovy Tablets?

Starting Wegovy tablets doesn't necessarily mean giving up every part of your social life but alcohol is worth thinking about.

One of the questions patients commonly ask is:

“Can I drink alcohol while taking Wegovy tablets?”

There isn't a specific alcohol interaction listed in the Wegovy tablet product information. However, current NHS advice says it is best not to drink alcohol while taking semaglutide, because alcohol can make side effects such as nausea and vomiting worse.

Why can alcohol feel different on Wegovy?

Wegovy contains semaglutide, a GLP-1 medicine that affects appetite and digestion.

Common side effects include:

• nausea
• vomiting
• diarrhoea
• constipation
• abdominal discomfort.

These symptoms can be more noticeable during dose increases. Vomiting and diarrhoea can also cause dehydration, something the Wegovy product information specifically warns patients to avoid.

Adding alcohol when you're already feeling nauseous or struggling to eat and drink normally may therefore make you feel considerably worse.

Can I have an occasional glass of wine?

Some people may tolerate small amounts of alcohol without noticeable problems, but NHS guidance is that avoiding alcohol is preferable while taking semaglutide because it can worsen nausea and vomiting.

If you do choose to drink, it makes sense to:

• keep the amount small
• drink slowly
• stay well hydrated
• avoid drinking if you're already feeling nauseous or unwell
• be particularly cautious when starting Wegovy or increasing the dose.

UK low-risk drinking guidance advises no more than 14 units of alcohol per week on a regular basis, spread over three or more days.

Will alcohol stop Wegovy working?

There is no evidence in the Wegovy product information that an occasional alcoholic drink directly “switches off” semaglutide.

However, alcohol can make weight management more difficult for other reasons. Alcoholic drinks can contain significant calories, and drinking may also influence food choices and eating behaviour.

So if your goal is weight loss or weight maintenance, reducing alcohol may help support the wider changes you're making.

Can I drink alcohol immediately after taking my Wegovy tablet?

No.

This is particularly important with Wegovy tablets.

They should be taken after fasting for at least 8 hours, with up to approximately 120ml of plain water.

You should then wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else or taking another oral medicine. Waiting less than 30 minutes reduces semaglutide absorption.

So don't take your Wegovy tablet with alcohol or with coffee, juice or another drink.

Do I need to stop drinking completely?

Not every patient's circumstances are the same.

If alcohol forms part of your normal routine, it is worth discussing honestly during your weight-management consultation rather than simply leaving it off your medical history.

And if Wegovy is already causing nausea, vomiting, poor fluid intake or significant digestive symptoms, avoiding alcohol is particularly sensible.
