Can I Take Omeprazole With Wegovy Tablets?

Heartburn, reflux and indigestion are common reasons people use omeprazole.

So if you're considering oral Wegovy, you may wonder:

Can I take Wegovy tablets and omeprazole together?

For most suitable patients, the available interaction data are reassuring.

The Wegovy Summary of Product Characteristics reports that omeprazole did not cause a clinically relevant change in semaglutide exposure or peak concentration.

In other words, there isn't evidence from the interaction study that omeprazole meaningfully reduces the amount of semaglutide reaching your bloodstream.

But don't take them at exactly the same time

This is an important distinction.

Although omeprazole itself did not produce a clinically important interaction with semaglutide, Wegovy tablets should still be taken on their own.

Take Wegovy after fasting for at least 8 hours with up to approximately 120ml of water.

Then wait at least 30 minutes before taking omeprazole or another oral medicine.

What could my morning routine look like?

For many patients:

Wake up → Wegovy → wait at least 30 minutes → omeprazole → continue according to your omeprazole instructions.

The NHS states that omeprazole is usually taken at the same time each morning and can be taken with or without food.

That can make the two medicines relatively straightforward to separate.

What if Wegovy is causing my heartburn?

This is worth discussing rather than automatically adding more medication.

Semaglutide can cause gastrointestinal effects, and indigestion is among the recognised adverse effects of Wegovy.

If reflux or indigestion has appeared or significantly worsened after beginning treatment, tell your clinician.

Simple measures such as smaller meals, avoiding very large or fatty meals and avoiding lying down immediately after eating may also help some patients.

Persistent or severe symptoms deserve assessment.

Should I start omeprazole just because I'm using Wegovy?

No.

There is no reason for everybody starting Wegovy to automatically begin a proton-pump inhibitor.

Omeprazole should be used when there is an appropriate indication, and the NHS recommends speaking to a healthcare professional if symptoms do not improve or if over-the-counter omeprazole is needed for longer than the recommended period.
