Wegovy 1.5mg Tablets: What to Expect From the Starting Dose

Why does Wegovy tablet treatment start at 1.5mg?
If you've been prescribed Wegovy tablets, 1.5 mg once daily is the licensed starting dose.
It isn't intended to be a test of how quickly you can lose weight. Its purpose is to introduce your body gradually to oral semaglutide before higher doses are considered.
Patients normally remain on 1.5 mg for at least one month. You can see the full progression in our Wegovy tablet dose guide.
How should Wegovy 1.5mg be taken?
This part matters particularly with tablets.
Wegovy should be taken:
- after fasting for at least 8 hours
- on an empty stomach
- swallowed whole
- with no more than approximately 120 mL of water
- followed by at least 30 minutes before food, drink or other oral medication.
Taking it differently can reduce semaglutide absorption.
What happens after the first month?
The next licensed dose is 4 mg once daily.
But dose changes should still be reviewed clinically rather than automatically made because a date has arrived.
The prescriber may consider how you've tolerated treatment, any gastrointestinal symptoms, how consistently you've been able to take the tablet and your overall clinical progress.
What if I miss a 1.5mg tablet?
Do not double the next dose.
The Wegovy SmPC states that if a tablet is missed, it should simply be skipped, with the next dose taken the following day.
Pharmulous approach
At Pharmulous, starting treatment isn't about getting somebody onto the highest dose as quickly as possible.
It is about finding a treatment plan that is effective, tolerable and sustainable.
Your prescriber can review how you're responding before recommending whether moving to the next dose is appropriate.
