Can I Stay on Wegovy Tablets After Reaching My Goal Weight?
Reaching your goal weight can feel like the finish line.
But one of the most common questions after successful weight loss is:
“Do I now have to stop Wegovy tablets?”
Not necessarily.
Wegovy tablets are licensed not only for weight loss, but specifically for weight management, including weight maintenance. Importantly, the licence refers to your initial BMI when treatment was started.
What if my BMI is now below the starting criteria?
This is where patients can become confused.
You may have started treatment with obesity or overweight plus a weight-related condition, but after successful treatment your BMI may now be considerably lower.
That does not mean your original weight history has disappeared.
The Wegovy tablet licence specifically uses initial BMI and includes weight maintenance as part of treatment.
Whether treatment should continue still requires an individual clinical assessment.
Why might maintenance treatment be needed?
Weight loss changes the number on the scales, but it doesn't necessarily remove the biological factors that contributed to weight gain in the first place.
Research with injectable semaglutide found that after treatment was stopped, participants regained approximately two-thirds of their previous weight loss over the following year. This was an injectable semaglutide study rather than a Wegovy tablet trial, but it illustrates why planning for maintenance is important.
Maintenance shouldn't therefore be viewed as failure to “come off” treatment.
For some patients, it is simply the next stage of managing their weight.
Do I need to stay on 25mg?
Not necessarily.
Although 25mg once daily is the standard Wegovy tablet maintenance dose, the UK product information also says the dose can be maintained at a previous dose level if needed.
At Pharmulous, we believe treatment should be reviewed according to the individual rather than automatically assuming everyone needs the highest dose indefinitely.
Your clinician may consider your:
- starting and current weight
- weight-loss history
- appetite control
- treatment response
- side effects
- nutritional intake
- risk of weight regain
- longer-term goals.
The Pharmulous approach to maintenance
We believe reaching your goal weight should start a maintenance conversation, not automatically end your support.
Our approach is doctor-led, flexible, maintenance-friendly and focused on the lowest effective dose where clinically appropriate.
Because losing weight is one achievement.
Maintaining it is another.
