Can I Take Other Medicines With Wegovy Tablets?

If you take regular morning medication, you may be wondering:

“Where does my Wegovy tablet fit?”

This is an important question because oral Wegovy has specific timing requirements — and some medicines may need additional consideration.

Can I take my normal tablets at the same time as Wegovy?

Generally, other oral medicines should not be swallowed at the same time as your Wegovy tablet.

Take Wegovy on an empty stomach after fasting for at least eight hours with up to 120ml of water.

Then wait at least 30 minutes before taking other oral medicines.

This isn't an arbitrary rule.

In a pharmacokinetic study where semaglutide was taken at the same time as five other tablets, semaglutide exposure fell by approximately 34%, with peak concentration falling by approximately 32%.

What if I take levothyroxine?

This deserves particular attention.

The Wegovy SmPC reports that total thyroxine exposure increased by 33% when levothyroxine was administered with oral semaglutide.

It therefore advises that monitoring thyroid parameters should be considered in patients using semaglutide and levothyroxine together.

That does not mean you cannot use the two medicines.

It means your prescriber needs to know about your thyroid treatment and may need to consider your medication timing and monitoring.

Don't change or stop levothyroxine yourself.

What about other medicines?

Semaglutide delays gastric emptying, which can potentially influence the absorption of oral medicines.

Particular care may therefore be required where medication has important timing or monitoring requirements.

The best approach is simple:

Tell your prescriber everything you take.

That includes prescription medicines, supplements, vitamins and medicines bought over the counter.

What about contraception?

The Wegovy product information reports no clinically relevant change in exposure to the combined oral contraceptive ingredients ethinylestradiol and levonorgestrel in the interaction studies described.

However, individual circumstances can vary and vomiting or significant diarrhoea can affect oral contraceptive reliability independently, so seek appropriate contraceptive advice where relevant.

What's the easiest morning routine?

For many patients:

• Wake up and take Wegovy.
• Wait at least 30 minutes.
• Take your other morning medication according to its own instructions.
• Have breakfast and drinks as appropriate.

Some medicines have their own fasting or timing requirements, so your personal routine may need to be different.
