How to Take Wegovy Tablets Correctly: The 8-Hour Fast and 30-Minute Rule

Wegovy tablets may sound simple: one tablet, once a day.

But how you take your Wegovy tablet matters more than it does with many everyday tablets.

Oral Wegovy contains semaglutide, which has relatively low and variable absorption when taken by mouth. Food, large amounts of water and taking other tablets at the same time can reduce how much semaglutide is absorbed.

So what is the correct routine?

The Wegovy tablet routine

Wegovy tablets should be taken once daily on an empty stomach after fasting for at least 8 hours.

Swallow one tablet whole with a small amount of plain water, no more than approximately 120ml.

Then wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking or taking any other oral medicines.

If you're unsure how your dose changes over time, see our Wegovy tablet dose guide.

Do not split, crush or chew your Wegovy tablet.

For many patients, the simplest routine is therefore:

Wake up → take Wegovy with a small amount of water → wait 30 minutes → breakfast, coffee and morning medicines.

If you're just beginning treatment, read our guide to Wegovy 1.5mg tablets.

Why does the 30-minute wait matter?

Wegovy tablets are absorbed mainly through the stomach.

The official UK product information states that taking semaglutide with food or large volumes of water reduces absorption and that longer fasting before and after taking the tablet results in greater absorption.

Waiting less than 30 minutes after taking Wegovy has specifically been shown to decrease its absorption.

That means taking your tablet correctly isn't just a technical instruction, it may influence how consistently the medicine works.

Can I have coffee with my Wegovy tablet?

Not at the same time.

Use plain water to swallow your tablet and then wait at least 30 minutes before having coffee, tea, breakfast or another drink.

If that sounds difficult, build Wegovy into your morning routine. Taking it immediately after waking can make the waiting period much easier.

What about my other morning tablets?

Other oral medicines should also wait until at least 30 minutes after Wegovy.

This is particularly important if you take medicines with specific timing requirements. Tell your Pharmulous clinician about all prescription medicines, over-the-counter treatments and supplements you use.

What if this routine doesn't suit me?

This matters.

A tablet is not necessarily more convenient for everyone simply because it removes injections.

If you know that an 8-hour fast followed by a 30-minute morning wait will be difficult to maintain consistently, tell your clinician.

There are different licensed approaches to weight management and the best treatment is not automatically the newest one.

The NHS guidance on taking semaglutide also provides information on how and when the medicine should be taken.

The Pharmulous approach

At Pharmulous, treatment is about finding something that works safely, effectively and realistically in everyday life.

Our doctor-led team can consider your medication history, lifestyle, previous weight-management treatment and longer-term goals when assessing which treatment option may be suitable.

Good treatment isn't only about what you take. It's also about finding something you can take correctly and consistently.
