Wegovy 1.7mg vs 2.4mg vs 7.2mg: Which Is a Maintenance Dose?

Blog

With Wegovy now available across a wider range of doses, it's easy to assume:

higher dose = better treatment.

That isn't how Wegovy should be used.

Wegovy 1.7mg

The standard escalation schedule reaches 1.7 mg during weeks 13–16, before the usual 2.4 mg maintenance stage.

If gastrointestinal side effects are significant, the product information allows dose escalation to be delayed or the previous dose to be used until symptoms improve.

Wegovy 2.4mg

2.4 mg once weekly is the standard maintenance dose.

Patients normally reach it after progressing through 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1 mg and 1.7 mg.

For many patients, this remains an effective long-term dose.

Wegovy 7.2mg

The newer 7.2 mg dose is an additional maintenance option for weight management in adults with obesity where needed.

It can only be considered after at least four weeks at 2.4 mg.

It should not be treated as the inevitable final stage.

Does a higher dose always mean more weight loss?

Across clinical-trial groups, 7.2 mg produced greater average weight reduction than 2.4 mg in STEP UP.

However, averages cannot tell you which dose is best for one individual.

The higher dose also produced more gastrointestinal adverse effects.

Should I increase if my current dose is working?

Not automatically.

If appetite is controlled, weight-management goals are being achieved and the medicine is well tolerated, there may be little reason to rush upwards.

How Pharmulous can help

At Pharmulous, dose progression should be based on response, tolerability and clinical need.

We favour an individual approach rather than treating the dose ladder as a race to the maximum strength.
