Wegovy and the Contraceptive Pill: Is It Different From Mounjaro?

Blog

This is one of the most important practical differences for women considering Wegovy or Mounjaro.

Does Wegovy make the pill less effective?

Current Wegovy product information says semaglutide does not decrease the effectiveness of oral contraception.

Studies found no clinically relevant reduction in exposure to ethinylestradiol or levonorgestrel when used with semaglutide.

Why have women heard something different about Mounjaro?

Current MHRA advice contains an additional precaution specifically for tirzepatide (Mounjaro).

People using an oral contraceptive are advised to add a barrier method or switch to a non-oral method for four weeks after starting tirzepatide and for four weeks after each dose increase.

That specific warning does not currently apply to injectable semaglutide in the same way.

But vomiting and diarrhoea still matter

Even if Wegovy itself isn't expected to reduce contraceptive hormone exposure, vomiting or severe diarrhoea can affect absorption of an oral contraceptive.

If that happens, follow the missed-pill/sickness instructions for your contraceptive and seek advice if you're unsure.

Can Wegovy be used during pregnancy?

No.

Semaglutide should not be used during pregnancy, and the current product information recommends stopping it at least two months before a planned pregnancy.

How Pharmulous can help

If you're considering moving from Mounjaro to Wegovy and contraception is part of the decision, tell your clinician which contraceptive method you use.

Treatment choice should consider your whole health picture, not simply weight-loss averages.
