Wegovy and Heart Health: Why Semaglutide Is More Than a Weight-Loss Injection

Blog

Most people know Wegovy as a weight-management medicine.

But semaglutide now has another important UK indication.

Wegovy is licensed to reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events in certain adults who already have cardiovascular disease and are living with overweight or obesity.

What did the SELECT trial investigate?

SELECT involved more than 17,000 adults with established cardiovascular disease and a BMI of at least 27 kg/m².

Participants received semaglutide 2.4 mg or placebo alongside standard care.

The primary outcome combined:

  • cardiovascular death
  • non-fatal heart attack
  • non-fatal stroke.

These events occurred in 6.5% of participants receiving semaglutide compared with 8.0% receiving placebo, corresponding to a hazard ratio of 0.80.

Does this mean Wegovy prevents heart attacks in everybody?

No.

The study involved a specific population: adults who already had established cardiovascular disease and were overweight or living with obesity.

It should not be interpreted as proving the same cardiovascular effect in every person considering weight-management treatment.

Why does this matter when choosing treatment?

Because choosing a weight-management medicine isn't always simply about which medicine produced the highest average percentage weight reduction in one trial.

A clinician may also need to consider:

  • cardiovascular disease
  • diabetes
  • medication interactions
  • side effects
  • contraception
  • previous treatment response
  • affordability and treatment continuity
  • maintenance needs.

That's why treatment decisions should be individualised.

How Pharmulous can help

At Pharmulous, our clinicians assess more than the number on the scales.

Your medical history, current medicines, previous GLP-1 experience and longer-term health goals all form part of determining whether Wegovy or another weight-management treatment may be suitable.

Weight management isn't only about losing kilograms. For the right patient, it can be part of improving longer-term health.
