Mounjaro Pen Changes in April 2026: What Patients Need to Know
From April 2026, patients in the UK may begin receiving an updated version of the Mounjaro® (tirzepatide) KwikPen. While the medication and dosing remain unchanged, the device itself has undergone important visual and structural improvements.
In this guide, we explain what’s changing, why it matters, and what you should expect.
What is changing with Mounjaro pens in 2026?
Eli Lilly will be introducing a visual and structural update to the Mounjaro
KwikPen.
The updated device has been modified to:
- Reduce leftover medicine
- Make it easier to track when the final dose has been administered
- Clearly indicate when the pen is ready to be discarded
Importantly, the modified KwikPen works in the same way as the original device.
When will the new Mounjaro pen be available?
The updated KwikPen is expected to become available in the UK from April 2026.
Existing stock of the current pen will continue to be dispensed
- Supply will gradually transition to the modified version
- Both versions will be available in the market during this period
- Patients may receive either version depending on pharmacy stock.
What stays the same?
Despite the design changes, the core treatment remains identical:
- Both versions are disposable, multi-dose, single-patient-use pre-filled pens
- Each pen delivers 4 fixed weekly doses (0.6mL per dose)
- The pen includes the necessary volume for priming before each injection
- The medication and dosing schedule are unchanged
- There is no difference in how the treatment works
Key updates to the new Mounjaro KwikPen
1. Improved plunger position
In the modified device:
- The plunger sits further down in the cartridge before first use
- This gives a clearer visual indication of remaining doses.
2. Extended internal plunger
A new internal component has been added behind the plunger, extending its length.
- This supports more accurate movement during dosing
- It improves visibility as doses are administered
3. Clearer end-of-pen indication
After the fourth dose:
- The plunger will sit near the end of the pen
- This clearly indicates the pen is ready to be discarded
This reduces confusion about whether doses remain.
4. Reduced leftover medication
The updated design reduces the amount of medicine remaining after the final dose.
This helps:
- Prevent misuse
- Improve dosing clarity
- Enhance patient safety
Will ordering or product codes change?
No.
- GTIN and PIP codes remain unchanged
- Pharmacies and providers can continue ordering as normal
- There is no administrative change required.
Why has the pen been updated?
The redesign focuses on:
✅ Improved clarity
Patients can more easily track dosing progress
✅ Better usability
The pen provides clearer visual feedback
✅ Enhanced safety
Reduced leftover medication lowers the risk of misuse
What should patients do?
If you receive the updated pen:
- Use it in the same way as your current device
- Continue following your prescribed dosing schedule
- Dispose of the pen after the fourth dose
If you are unsure, always speak to your pharmacist or prescribing clinician.
