Needle-free weight loss treatment may soon become a real option for more patients. Here’s how oral semaglutide, also known as Wegovy tablets, compares with Foundayo.

Oral GLP-1 weight management support: coming soon to Pharmulous

At Pharmulous, we are preparing to support eligible patients with safe, clinically reviewed oral GLP-1 weight management options once they become available and appropriate for use. This is anticipated to be within the next few months.

Our service will remain focused on proper clinical assessment, patient safety and ongoing support — not quick fixes or one-size-fits-all prescribing.

GLP-1 weight loss treatments have changed the way many people manage their weight. Until recently, most people have known these medicines as injections, such as Wegovy, Mounjaro and Ozempic.

The next step is oral GLP-1 treatment: a daily tablet instead of an injection.

Two names you may hear more about are Wegovy tablets, also known as oral semaglutide, and Foundayo, also known as orforglipron.

At Pharmulous, our approach is simple: weight loss treatment should be safe, clinically appropriate and supported by qualified healthcare professionals.

This does not mean one medicine is automatically “better” for everyone.

A higher average percentage may be important, but it is not the only thing that matters. A prescriber will also consider safety, side effects, your medical history, other medication, availability and how easily the treatment fits into your routine.

What are oral GLP-1 tablets?

GLP-1 is a natural hormone involved in appetite, digestion and blood sugar control.

GLP-1 medicines work by copying some of the effects of this hormone. They may help you:

• Feel fuller for longer
• Feel less hungry
• Reduce food cravings
• Eat smaller portions
• Support weight loss alongside lifestyle changes

The main difference with oral GLP-1 tablets is simple: instead of using an injection pen, you take a tablet by mouth once a day.

Wegovy tablets: oral semaglutide

Wegovy tablets contain semaglutide, the same active ingredient used in Wegovy injections.

Semaglutide is a GLP-1 medicine that helps regulate appetite and fullness. It is designed to support weight loss when used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

The key thing to know about Wegovy tablets is the routine.

Because semaglutide can be difficult for the body to absorb as a tablet, it usually needs to be taken in a very specific way:

• Once daily
• In the morning
• On an empty stomach
• With water only
• Before food, drink or other oral medicines

This routine matters. Taking it incorrectly may affect how well the medicine is absorbed.

Final dosing and suitability must always be confirmed by a prescriber.

Wegovy tablets may suit people who:

• Prefer tablets to injections
• Are comfortable with a strict morning routine
• Can wait before eating, drinking or taking other tablets
• Want a treatment based on semaglutide
• Are suitable after a clinical assessment

Wegovy tablets may be less suitable for people who:

• Struggle to follow morning medicine routines
• Need to take other tablets first thing in the morning
• Have certain stomach, pancreas, gallbladder or thyroid-related medical history
• Are pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to conceive
• Are advised by a clinician that GLP-1 treatment is not suitable

Foundayo: orforglipron

Foundayo contains orforglipron, another oral GLP-1 medicine.
Like other GLP-1 treatments, it is designed to support weight loss by helping with appetite and fullness. The main point of difference is convenience.

Foundayo is expected to be a once-daily tablet with a more flexible routine than oral semaglutide. This may make it easier for some people to take consistently.

However, UK dosing, prescribing instructions and availability are still to be confirmed.

Once UK product information is available, a prescriber will be able to confirm the correct dose schedule and whether Foundayo is suitable.

Foundayo may suit people who:

• Prefer tablets to injections
• Want a once-daily GLP-1 option
• May find strict fasting instructions difficult
• Prefer a treatment that may fit more easily into daily life
• Are suitable after a clinical assessment

Foundayo may be less suitable for people who:

• Are already taking another GLP-1 treatment
• Have been advised against GLP-1 medicines
• Have certain stomach, pancreas, gallbladder or thyroid-related medical history
• Are pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to conceive
• Need a treatment that is already available now

Which oral GLP-1 tablet is better?

There is no single best option for everyone.

Wegovy tablets have shown average weight loss of around 14–17% in available study data. Foundayo has shown average weight loss of around 12.4%.

However, treatment choice is not only about the highest percentage.

A clinician will also consider:

• Your BMI and health conditions
• Your current medication
• Your previous experience with weight loss treatment
• Your risk of side effects
• How easily you can follow the dosing instructions
• Whether the treatment is licensed and available
• Your long-term health goals

For some patients, Wegovy tablets may be more appropriate. For others, Foundayo may be easier to fit into everyday life. Some patients may still be better suited to an injectable treatment.

A tablet may feel easier because there are no needles. An injection may feel easier because it is usually only once a week.

The right choice is the one that is safe, suitable and realistic for you.

Can I switch from injections to tablets?

Yes, but only with clinical advice.

You should not take two GLP-1 medicines together. Combining treatments can increase the risk of side effects and may not be safe.

Before switching, a clinician would need to review:

• Which treatment you are currently taking
• Your current dose
• How long you have been taking it
• Your side effects
• Your weight loss progress
• Your medical history
• Your other medication

Switching is not just a straight swap. Timing and dose matter.

What side effects can happen?

Oral GLP-1 medicines can cause similar side effects to injectable GLP-1 treatments.
Common side effects may include:

• Feeling sick
• Vomiting
• Diarrhoea
• Constipation
• Indigestion or reflux
• Stomach discomfort
• Bloating
• Reduced appetite
• Headache
• Tiredness

Most side effects are mild to moderate, especially when starting treatment or increasing the dose. However, some side effects can be more serious.

You should seek urgent medical advice if you experience severe or ongoing stomach pain, repeated vomiting, signs of dehydration, symptoms of an allergic reaction, or if you feel seriously unwell.

Why clinical support matters

Weight loss medication should never be issued without proper checks.

At Pharmulous, treatment is based on a clinical assessment. A qualified prescriber reviews your health information to decide whether treatment is suitable and safe.

This includes looking at:

• Your weight and BMI
• Any weight-related health conditions
• Your medical history
• Your current medication
• Your previous treatment experience
• Your risk of side effects
• Your long-term goals

If treatment is appropriate, you will receive clear guidance on how to take it, what to expect and when to ask for help.

Coming soon to Pharmulous

In Summary

Oral GLP-1 tablets could offer a new option for people who want weight loss treatment without injections.

Wegovy tablets may offer higher average weight loss, but they usually require a stricter morning routine.

Foundayo may offer a more flexible daily tablet option, although UK dosing and availability are still to be confirmed.
Both are prescription-only medicines and are not suitable for everyone.

The safest next step is a clinical assessment, so a qualified prescriber can help you understand which options may be appropriate for you.

Oral GLP-1 weight management support is coming soon to Pharmulous.

Our service will be built around safe prescribing, clinical review and patient support.
