How Often Should I Weigh Myself? A Guide for Mounjaro, Wegovy and Weight Maintenance
Blog
How often should I weigh myself?
If you're trying to lose weight, it can be tempting to step on the scales every morning or even several times a day.
But does weighing yourself more often actually help?
For many people, once a week is a sensible starting point.
NICE specifically gives weighing yourself around once weekly as an example of regular self-monitoring for adults trying to manage their weight. It also warns that weight monitoring should be approached carefully in anyone who has, or may be at risk of developing, disordered eating.
At Pharmulous, we are generally much more interested in your weight trend over time than one isolated number.
Why can my weight change from one day to the next?
Body weight isn't the same thing as body fat.
Your scales are also measuring:
- water
- food and drink in your digestive system
- changes associated with your menstrual cycle
- bowel contents
- changes in glycogen stores
- muscle
- body fat.
That means your weight can go up temporarily even when your overall weight-loss plan is working.
A salty meal, constipation, a later-than-usual dinner or your menstrual cycle can all affect what you see on the scales.
What is the best time to weigh yourself?
The most important factor is consistency.
- Time of the day - Weight naturally changes throughout the day
- Same scales - Different scales may give different readings
- Same location - Uneven or soft flooring can affect readings
- Similar clothing - Clothing adds variable weight
- Before breakfast - Removes some variation from food and drink
Many people find that weighing themselves in the morning, after using the toilet and before eating or drinking gives the most consistent comparison.
How often should I weigh myself on Mounjaro?
Once weekly will be enough for many patients taking Mounjaro.
Mounjaro is licensed for weight management, including both weight loss and weight maintenance, in eligible adults.
You shouldn't expect your weight to fall by exactly the same amount every week.
A pattern like this can be completely possible:
- Week 1: −0.8 kg
- Week 2: no change
- Week 3: +0.3 kg
- Week 4: −0.9 kg
The important question is what is happening over several weeks, rather than whether the scales moved this morning.
Should I weigh myself every day?
Some people genuinely like daily weighing.
If you do, it can be more useful to look at your weekly average rather than comparing one morning with the next.
But more data isn't always better.
If weighing yourself starts to affect your mood, eating behaviour or relationship with food, weighing less frequently may be preferable.
NICE specifically highlights the need to be aware of disordered eating when encouraging regular weighing.
What about Mounjaro maintenance?
When you reach maintenance, the goal changes.
You are no longer necessarily looking for:
“How much have I lost?”
Instead, the more useful question becomes:
“Is my weight broadly stable?”
A small movement up or down is not necessarily a problem.
At Pharmulous, maintenance treatment is reviewed individually. We look at your weight trajectory, appetite, response to treatment, side effects and overall circumstances rather than expecting your weight to remain fixed to one exact number.
When should I contact my prescriber?
Contact your clinical team if:
- your weight continues falling when you are no longer trying to lose weight
- you are losing weight much faster than expected
- your appetite is so suppressed that you're struggling to eat adequately
- your weight is steadily increasing despite treatment
- you are considering changing your medication dose yourself
- weighing yourself is becoming distressing or compulsive.
The Pharmulous view
For most patients:
Once-weekly weighing under similar conditions is a simple and useful way to monitor progress.
Daily weighing can suit some people, but don't allow normal daily fluctuations to dictate what you eat or whether you think your treatment is working.
Look at the trend.
How Pharmulous can help
Weight management isn't simply about getting the number on the scales as low as possible.
At Pharmulous, we support patients through weight loss and long-term weight maintenance, with ongoing clinical review to ensure treatment remains appropriate as your weight and circumstances change.
